Polytechnic Institute of Beja School of Technology – 28 Mar 2016

Villa Escarpa, Algarve, southern Portugal – 10 Oct 2013
Design: Mario Martins
Villa Escarpa Algarve
photo : Fernando Guerra [FG+SG]

The house merges with a long water surface which dissects the wide living and kitchen spaces. These spaces are complimented by terraces protected from the wind, but open to the sun and impressive views. This is the social area of the house; open and fluid. Four bedrooms are located in a private area with access from a corridor that runs alongside a central courtyard. In this private courtyard the natural light is filtered, creating an intimate and desireable space.

House of the Arts, Miranda do Corvo, central Portugal – 3 Oct 2013
Design: Future Architecture Thinking (FAT)
House of the Arts Portugal

The sloping roofs of this building establish a dialogue with the geometry of the mountain landscape, in an analogy to the village rooftops. The dynamism achieved through the continuity between façades and roof is accentuated by a strong red colour, emphasizing its design and highlighting the building through the surrounding landscaped area vegetation.

House on a Warehouse, Torres Novas, central Portugal – 23 Sep 2013
Design: Miguel Marcelino
New House in Torres Novas
photograph : Joao Morgado

Given the constraints of the existing warehouse, the house shape turns out to be automatically set: a box that rests on the existing structure. The rooms are placed to the east, the toilets to the west, as well as the kitchen, looking to a centennial olive tree. The existing balcony will be maintained and “duplicated” as a shading element.

Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo, north west Portugal

Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo – 6 Aug 2013
Like a low-level Pompidou Centre with the colour taken out. Eduardo Souto de Moura is a difficult architect to pin down – and that is a good thing. Look at the massive difference between say the highly expressive Estadio Municipal de Braga and the sensitive restoration of Bernardas Convent in Tavira. Or between the bold Paula Rêgo Museum and the discreet Cemetery of Hoog-Kortrijk in Belgium. It is no wonder he has won both the Pritzker Prize and the Wolf Prize, his work is questioning, not always pretty, but probing the edges of current architectural language.

Municipal Library Setúbal – 19 Jul 2013
Design: Jordana Tomé + Filipe Oliveira + Vitor Quaresma

Porto Bakery Portugal

Before designing this project the architects visited and analyzed other similar spaces trying to find some errors that could be corrected. They found out that a basic error being committed was that most of these services only had one type of space. This design attitude ignored the variation of mood one feels during the day, or even one is alone or with friends, needs a place to read a book or just wants to socialize.

This is a two-storey school center, including a kindergarten and an elementary school located in Mouriz, Paredes, Northern of Portugal. Formally the school was defined as a longitudinal volume. Valongo House – 31 May 2013
Thought as a large volume that cuts and breaks the house proposing spaces, scales, experiences and distinctive moments. The entrance sharply assumed by a breach or opening between volumes, gives us, a compression accentuated by a sculpture that accompanies the entrance path. The house closes itself on contact with the street and opens itself to the interior of the land through the large windows, provoking unbalances and sensations.
