This architectural project in Matosinhos will open its doors on June 16, 2017, in Matosinhos, with the exhibition “Poder Arquitectura”, curated by Jorge Carvalho, Pedro Bandeira and Ricardo Carvalho. The project and program of the architectural project were presented by the institution’s Executive Director, Nuno Sampaio, during a session which was also attended by the commissioners of the exhibition “Power / Architecture”, Roberto Cremascoli, responsible for program running parallel to the exhibition; the councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Matosinhos, Fernando Rocha; the President of the Portuguese Chamber of Architects, João Santa-Rita and the Director-General of the Arts, Paula Varanda.

Nuno Sampaio emphasized that the project “will contribute to enable Architecture to gradually assume its role in the national and international context — appreciating the best of the its production in the improvement of the urban environment and the citizens’ quality of life, and strengthening its role as a strategic cultural resource of Portugal in the World and of the World in Portugal.”

“Power / Architecture”, the inaugural exhibit of the new premises, will feature four dozen projects illustrating the relationship of architecture with eight powers that align, inflect, and diverge from each other, and influence the way the world structures itself. Among the selected projects are works by Álvaro Siza, David Chipperfield, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Herzog & De Meuron, João Luís Carrilho da Graça, Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Rem Koolhaas, Valerio Olgiati, Vijitha Basnayake and Witherford Watson Mann.

In addition to this exhibition, and to the parallel program “Please Share”, the exhibitions “Portuguese Architecture from 1974 to 1999 – 25 years of Democracy in Portugal”, coordinated by João Belo Rodeia, and the “Brazilian Architecture Collection”, curated by Guilherme Wisnik and Fernando Serapião, were also presented. Information concerning each of the projects can be downloaded by journalists at http://cda.ideoma.pt/presskit/venezanov16/

The session held today at the Università Iuav di Venezia also included a debate between Álvaro Siza Vieira and Vittorio Gregotti, moderated by Alberto Ferlenga. The Portuguese representation in the Venice Biennial was organised by the Directorate-General for the Arts and by the Portuguese Chamber of the Architects, curated by Nuno Grande and Roberto Cremascoli.

It is worth mentioning that this is a national project dedicated to the dissemination, archival and promotion of architecture. Its collection already includes, among others, projects and models of the three Portuguese-speaking Pritzker Prizes: Álvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
