Carlos Ramos Pavilion

The Carlos Ramos Pavilion, one of a set of buildings of the School of Architecture of Porto (FAUP), in Portugal, was designed by the architect Álvaro Siza. Built between 1985 and 1986 has recently been rehabilitated.

The building became an opportunity to honor Carlos Ramos, one of the most important directors of the school – responsible for its management since 1952 until the sixties – for having created an ideological context of large opening that would provide a profound renewal of the teaching of architecture at the School of Porto.

Built to solve the lack of working conditions and space for the development of educational activity of the newly created FAUP and limited by the constraints of a very modest budget, the Carlos Ramos Pavilion would become a reference in Álvaro Siza work.

Evidencing an attitude of respect and reinterpreting the existing garden, the building was designed to naturally integrate the scale of existing constructions and the presence of secular trees. Thus, the presence of camellias, rhododendrons and a eucalyptus determine the twists of the building and the retreat of its base in a way that would not affect the root of the trees that outline the landscape with him.

The Costa Nova Sailing Club, one of the oldest nautical clubs in the estuary area of the Ria de Aveiro, was divided into 3 main spaces: the restaurant, the members’ bar and the terrace. For each of these spaces, there was a specific audience, with different preferences and traditions, which provoked the great challenge of this project.
