The architectural project presented by Estudio Lamela architects has won the International competition launched by PPL, (Polish Airport Authority) to expand and refurbish the “Fryderyk Chopin International Airport” in Warsaw, Poland.

The competition was held between a group of large, distinguished, design specialized teams including the French Paul Andreu (ADP), the German Von Gerkan (GMP) and the American HNTB.

The proposal, developed in three competition phases, over a one and a half year period, is based on the integration of the existing terminal (T1) with the new terminal (T2), of approximately 100.000m2. The new Terminal including a new pier of 725ml, with a capacity for 34 fixed links, will operate as a HUB -multiple connections node-, a strategic air centre in Eastern and Central Europe, for a total capacity of 12,5 million passengers per year.

The system for the project is based on the concept of maximum flexibility and modularity, which creates a potent image and permits possible adjustments and expansions in the future without significantly altering its configuration and facilitating its adaptation with current and future needs.

The roof and façade, of light conception, configures ample and tall spaces that provide the building with a great spatial quality.

The floor plans have been designed to allow functional passenger flows, creating a sequence of spaces, arriving through warm and transparent areas with visual connections between all passengers (departures and arrivals) and the exterior, while allowing natural light to enter all areas, facilitating passenger orientation.

In addition, the project presented by Estudio Lamela architects also contemplates interventions in land side, including new access and parking facilities for over 5500 vehicles, etc.

During the competition phase, Estudio Lamela architects collaborated with Ferrovial (construction and technical department), Budimex (construction), Budimex Projekt (local engineering), Sener (airport planning and special systems), Buro Happold (roof and facades), and 2a2 (landscape).
