Design: Du Besset-Lyon Architectes Educational Facility in Saint-Denis University Client : Saint-Denis University Site : Saint-Denis Completed: July 2005 Surface area : 6 800m² cost : 7.14 M€ The program is made of offices spaces and educational facilities. The site is the only remaining open space in a densely built campus. The building corresponds to the openness of the site. Its shapes do not impose and the texture of its facades softens its presence. The views slide along the rounded outline of the building and the hierarchy between front and back is challenged. The space turns around the building. Its façades do not assert their presence. Their surface seems to recede and while they blur the repetition and fragmentation effects typical of administrative buildings, they give a perception of the building that is of a global form. The façades are made of two layers. The exterior one is in frosted glass, the second one, set 25cm back, is a reflective material, stainless steel or glass. The presence of the façades constantly changes following the direction of the sun and the position of the viewer. Ses formes ne s’imposent pas et la matière de ses façades adoucit sa présence. Ses contours arrondis font glisser les vues et n’établissent pas de hiérarchies entre devant et derrière, entre façade principale et petits côtés. L’espace tourne autour du bâtiment. Ses façades ne présentent pas de caractère définitif. Leur surface est changeante et, en gommant les effets de répétition et de fragmentation causés par les percements des bureaux, elles permettent la lecture globale du bâtiment. Les façades sont constituées de deux peaux : à l’extérieur un verre opalescent, à l’intérieur, 25cm en retrait, une surface réfléchissante faite soit par une tôle inox soit par du verre miroir. La lumière y joue constamment au cours de la journée et suivant la position du spectateur.
