Hotel Brosundet re-opened Apr 2008 Snøhetta Hotel Brosundet has been designed in a warehouse along the harbour in the old part of Ålesund on the west coast of Norway. picture : Terje Rakke The warehouse was built as part of a prestigious rebuilding effort after the great fire of Ålesund in 1904. The building is listed and is situated in the middle of a National Art Nouveau Landmark. The Hotel consists of only 47 rooms and has a very intimate atmosphere with almost no two rooms having the same layout. As a supplement to the Hotel, a single suite has been designed in the nearby Lighthouse ‘Molja’. The 13m2 of this suite are spread over two floors and consists of an entrance, a bathroom and a bedroom with a semi circular bed fitting the shape of the lighthouse. Through the window guests can overlook the seafront of Ålesund and the Atlantic Ocean in the horizon. photographs : Marte Garmann Johnsen In the Hotel the heavy duty wooden beam construction has been left exposed in all rooms and along with the brushed brick walls makes a beautiful contrast the new elements. The bathrooms stand out as shiny, sharp jewels of cream tiles and frosted glass. The exposed wooden constructions speak for themselves and we felt there was plenty of room to tone down the contrasts without loosing the character of the building. The furniture was designed with refined detailing in white stained oak to link the rawness in the construction and the modern bathroom elements.
