The architect's description of the project
The project is a coastal cabin placed on Vardehaugen, an outcrop by the mouth of the fjord at Grøttingen on the Fosen peninsula. The property is situated 35 meters above sea level in a small depression at the top of the outcrop, with a panoramic view in virtually all directions. The adjacent landscape is dominated by sea, rock, heath, and a sometimes rough coastal climate. The project is a result of the wish of the employers for a cabin custom-made for their family, the characteristic property, and the changing climate in the area. The building is inspired by the traditional Norwegian farm yard, in which flexible half-climatic outside spaces and a clear social organisation are the leading principles.
The cabin is shaped in a pose similar to a mountain fox curling up to avoid the wind. The body of the building lies snugly by a low mountain ridge and embraces the polished rock furthest out on the property. A small annex helps define an atrium and to shelter the outside spaces from cold and wind.
The kitchen is the spine of the building and ties together the different rooms. From the work bench one can see the cabin, the atrium, and the panoramic sea view. The bedroom and bathroom are located towards the back of the property, with a view to the heath on Vardehaugen. The living room is situated at the outermost point on the property and functions as an observatory. From here, one has a sea view from three directions and can enjoy the path of the sun from the sofa. There is an open plan solution, but there are still shielded nooks and crannies that allow one to retire.
To provide maximum protection for the cabin, the black roof folds in and becomes wall surfaces towards the most exposed directions. The wall surfaces are placed at the angle that will give least access to the wind. At the entrance and by the living spaces, the rough, dark walls are replaced by horizontal, white covering. The cabin is constructed on a simple wooden framework covered with Royal impregnated pine. The cabin is anchored by a steel rod that stretches from the ground beam and via the [Ringmur??] to the bedrock.
The planning of the cabin was executed during a year of regular trips to Vardehaugen. It was done this way in order to get the most complete impression of the varying climatic conditions affecting the property. Given the exposed position of the property and the strict demands of the regulation plans, neighbours and local authorities were included early in the design process. Many of the drafts were, for example, drawn full-scale in the snow, in order to visualise the size and exact placement of the building. Local wind information on the property was registered with the help of [vindpølser??] and conversations with local inhabitants. These observations, in addition to Anne Brit Børve's PhD dissertation "Hus og husgrupper i klimautsatte, kalde strøk," became important tools in relation to the placement, disposition, and design of the building entities.
The technical details of the cabin were decided upon in close dialogue with the contractor "Åbygg AS," and were based on their long experience of building in the particular coastal climate on the Fosen peninsula.

Accessibility
The access to the property is via a simple construction road adapted to cars. If you drive all the way up to the property, there is a 10-meter long walking distance from the parking space to the entrance of the cabin. The height of the cabin is minimal on top of the foundation wall, and carefully adjusted to the bordering landscape so that traversing inside and outside spaces can be done without hardly any steps or high thresholds. The cabin itself is on one level and has no thresholds or stairs that impede the use by handicapped persons. The bathroom satisfies the demands for wheelchair users.

Arkitektens beskrivelse av prosjektet
Prosjektet er en kysthytte plassert på Vardehaugen, en fjellknaus ytterst ute mot havgapet ved Grøttingen på Fosenhalvøya. Tomta ligger 35 meter over havet i et lite nedsøkk ved toppen av knausen, med panoramisk utsikt i tre av de fire himmelretningene. Det tilstøtende landskapet domineres av hav, skuret berg, lynghei og et til tider røft kystklima. Prosjektet er et resultat av oppdragsgivers ønske om en hytte skreddersydd for familien, den særegne tomten og de skiftende klimatiske forholdene i området. Bygget er inspirert av det urnorske klyngetunet, hvor fleksible halvklimatiske uterom og en oversiktlig sosial organisering, er fremtredende prinsipper.
Hytten ligger slik en fjellrev som kveiler seg opp for å beskytte seg mot vinden. Bygningskroppen ligger tett inntil en lav bergvegg og favner som en "armkrok" rundt det blankskurede berget ytterst på tomta. Et lite anneks er med på å definere et atrium og skjerme uterommene for kuldedrag og vind.
Kjøkkenet er byggets ryggrad og binder sammen de forskjellige rommene. Fra kjøkkenbenken har man oversikt over hytta, atriet og panoramautsikten mot havet. Soverom og bad ligger innerst på tomta, med utsikt mot lyngheilandskapet på Vardehaugen. Stuen ligger ytterst på tomta og kan beskrives som et observatorium. Herfra har man utsikt til havet i tre himmelretninger og kan nyte solens gang fra sofaen. Planen er åpen, men har likevel kroker og skjermede områder og soner som gjør at man kan trekke seg tilbake om man ønsker det.
For å gi maksimal beskyttelse av hytta, bretter det sorte taket seg ned og blir til veggflater imot de mest utsatte himmelretningene. Veggflatene er vinklet slik at vinden får minst mulig tak. Ved inngangsparti og oppholdssoner kler bygget av seg og de grove mørke veggene blir erstattet med horisontal hvitmalt kledning. Konstruktivt består hytten hovedsakelig av en enkel reisverkskonstruksjon i tre, kledd med royalimpregnert furu. Hytten er forankret med stålstag som strekker seg fra bunnsvillen, via ringmuren til grunnfjellet.
Prosjekteringen av hytta ble fordelt ut over ett år med jevnlige ekskursjoner til Vardehaugen. Dette for å få et best mulig inntrykk av tomtas varierende klimatiske forhold. På bakgrunn av tomtens utsatte posisjon og de strenge kravene i reguleringsplanene, ble naboer og lokale myndigheter tidlig inkludert i designprosessen. Flere av utkastene ble blant annet tegnet opp i snøen i 1:1, for å visualisere byggets størrelse og eksakte plassering. Lokale vindformasjoner på tomta ble registrert ved hjelp av utplasserte vindpølser og i samtaler med innbyggerne på Grøttingen. Observasjonene, kombinert med Anne Brit Børves doktorgradavhandling "Hus og husgrupper i klimautsatte, kalde strøk", ble viktig redskap i forhold til plassering, disponering og formgivningen av bygningsvolumene.
Hyttas tekniske detaljer ble planlagt i nær dialog med entreprenøren "Åbygg AS" og baserer seg hovedsakelig på deres årelange erfaring med bygging i kystklimaet på Fosenhalvøya.

Universell utforming
Adgangen til tomten er via en enkel anleggsvei tilrettelagt for bil. Om man kjører helt opp til tomten er det 10 meter gange fra parkering til inngangspartiet på hytten. Hytten er utformet med minimal høyde på grunnmuren og er nøye tilpasset det tilstøtende landskapet, slik at ferdselen mellom inne og ute stort sett skjer uten trapper eller høye terskler. Selve hytten er utført i ett plan og har ingen nevneverdige terskler eller trapper som hindrer ferdsel for bevegelseshemmede. Baderommet tilfredsstiller krav for rullestolbrukere.
