Nordic Architecture - Scandinavian DesignFor Norwegian Architecture Links, scroll to base of page YOUNG NORDIC DESIGN - NORWAY: THE GENERATION X Nordic Architecture - Scandinavian Design PR Forget Ikea, for the best in stylish Scandinavian domestic design this Autumn visit The Lighthouse, Scotland’s National Centre for Architecture, Design and the City. Alongside the classics of Arne Jacobsen (on display in the Evergreens and Nevergreens exhibition), the centre will be showcasing work by over 40 young designers working in Scandinavia today. In association with Network North, The Lighthouse is set to present the ONLY UK SHOWING of Young Nordic Design - The Generation X: 14 Sep - 20 Oct 2002. In association with the exhibition The Lighthouse shop will stock a number of Nordic design products. Scandinavian style is a way of life - it is at once urban and close to nature. The tradition under the stern limits set by conditions - as one goes further north, the climate gets harsher and the materials scarcer - has been to simplify. Young Nordic Design - The Generation X includes work by designers and design groups from all five Nordic countries; Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The work reflects the heritage of design produced in the Nordic countries, with its emphasis on a reduced language of form and strict requirements of quality. Typical features, such as natural materials, light-weight, delicate features and simple joints, are starting points. However, the international orientation of young designers is also evident, having studied and worked abroad their work is in many ways pan-European. Items on display include furniture-, industrial-, textile-, graphic-, and fashion design. The selected designers, who are mostly in their twenties and thirties, were selected for the quality of their work, their original and lasting design solutions, and their unique perspectives, approaches, or ideologies. Following in the tradition of such great Scandinavian designers as Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen, and Georg Jensen, these designers are adept at combining innovative design and aesthetics with technical and functional concerns. Among the objects featured are the engaging “Bagman” Plastic Bag Holder (2000), by Sigbjørn Windingstad (Norway), a simple but clever invention that recalls the flexible cartoon character “Gumby,” and that attaches to the front of a bicycle to hold plastic grocery bags. There is The Chip Lounger (1995), designed by Teppo Asikainen and Ilkka Terho/Valvomo (Finland), a sexy, eye-catching reclining chair, made of form pressed plywood, engineered to meet the highest standards for ergonomic comfort. Meanwhile FIVEFOOTELEVEN [5'11"] (1998), designed by Sanna Hansson (Sweden) is a mirror that comments on the contemporary Western ideal of the female body-the mirror’s height is the supermodel’s standard height, and its width is exceedingly thin. A collection of women’s clothing (2000) designed by Berg_óra Gu_nadóttir (Iceland) will also be on display, that consists of trousers, blouses, and sweaters, which range in material from contemporary to natural and organic fibres, and in style from sexy to free-form.
