Context \ Contrast New York

Opening at New York's Center for Architecture on Oct. 6, the show "Context\Contrast" attempts to answer the question, "In historic districts, when is modern architecture OK?"

This topic is of longstanding concern to Sherida Paulsen, 2009 president of AIANY and former commissioner of the Landmarks Preservation Commission in New York City. Paulsen tapped the author and historian Rachel Carley to curate this show, which reflects the theme of Ms. Paulsen's tenure as president.

Attached is a view of South Street Seaport commissioned for the exhibition, one of number of fantastic images by artist/photographer Elizabeth Felicella. It shows how Rafael Viñoly's Seaport Park Condominium (1982) successfully inhabits this historic milieu, while contrasting markedly with the megalithic lower Manhattan towers that loom over the celebrated district's southern edge. In the foreground, the parking lot represents yet another new construction site in one of New York's oldest neighborhoods.

About AIA New York Chapter
The AIA New York Chapter is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. We are dedicated to three goals: design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. The Chapter's members include more than 4,000 practicing architects, allied professionals, students, and public members interested in architecture and design. To fulfill its mission, the Chapter sponsors an array of programs, usually held at the Center for Architecture, that explore the role of architects in housing, planning, historic preservation, and urban design among other topics, as well as our annual Design Awards Program for architecture, interior architecture and unrealized projects. In addition, the Chapter publishes a magazine, OCULUS, coordinates 24 committees and works with its charitable affiliate the Center for Architecture Foundation to provide scholarship and educational opportunities for students and the general public.
