Design: Bourne Blue Architecture

photo from architect
The site presents has a long boundary that abuts a nature reserve, immediately to the East. To the West is a steep hill with existing houses. The client required a house to suit a young, growing family, with provision to accommodate extended family from interstate. The house should take advantage of the site’s attributes, and crop out the less desirable views.
House of Silence, Shiga, Japan - 21 May 2013
Design: FORM + Kouichi Kimura Architects

photo : Kei Nakajima
This house is austere and quite impenetrable - the facade materials give it a heavyweight appearance and there are minimal openings. You could say it is an unfriendly building, but inside there are a variety of strong interlocking spaces making for a dynamic introverted architecture.
H3 House, Athens, Greece - 20 May 2013
Design: 314 Architecture Studio

photo from architect
Located on a plot of 7000m2 the total area of the house is 1000m2. The house was designed to give a sense of balance of the water element and the owners love for yachts, which after all was the inspiration for this project. The contact of the house and the artificial ponds that surround it, create a cooling sensation.

Fishing Lodge in Batak, Bulgaria - 18 May 2013
Design: Simon Gill Architects

photo : Mike Daines
The architect says “Our aim was to create an enchanted place that would resonate with the great natural beauty and rich culture of its location. We felt it essential that the house created a presence that connected both to the landscape and Bulgarian traditions, rather than just creating a mute abstract object standing as something ‘other’ in the landscape. And this included reducing the impact of the house on the surrounding environment as far as possible.”
Glass House, Hampshire, England - 15 May 2013
Design: AR Design Studio

photo : Martin Gardner
The owner’s love of glass fuelled their brief to construct a beautifully simple sculptural glass staircase and a contemporary glass extension, situated at the rear of the property in the space created by the ‘C’ shape of the building, which would open itself up to the garden.
Air Villa, Panama - 15 May 2013
Design: Haiko Cornelissen Architecten

image from architect

Haus W, Frankfurt am Main, Germany - 14 May 2013
Design: Ian Shaw Architekten

photo from architect
This well crafted cuboid generates spectacular light. The development, constructed out of prefabricated high insulation timber panels and energy-efficient glazing, is articulated as a classic modernist intervention: a box set into a traditional pitched roof atop a standard three-storey house.
La Selva Show Villa, Catalonia, Spain - 14 May 2013
Design: Studio RHE

image from PGA Catalunya
Overlooking the perfected landscape of the PGA golf course we described a simple arced line in the landscape. This line of local Catalan stone creates a strong visual and structural anchor throughout the site for the contemporary house design, as sculpture in the landscape.

photo from architect

Matsushima Tree House, Miyagi, Japan - 9 May 2013
Design: Tree House Creations

photo from architect

De Wet 34, Cape Town, South Africa - 7 May 2013
Design: SAOTA

photo : Adam Letch
The site is positioned in the heart of Bantry Bay in Cape Town, on the slopes of Lion’s Head overlooking the bay. The brief was to create a home with all the spectacle of an Atlantic Seaboard showpiece but also to respond to the practical needs of family life and to create a feeling of sanctuary.
Brian Road House, Morningside, Johannesburg, South Africa - 29 Apr 2013
Design: Nico van der Meulen Architects

photo from architect
This 1960’s home, located in a prime area in a quiet cul-de sac of Johannesburg has been completely renovated. The glass wall between the living areas and the lanai folds completely away to create one huge living space, with the second lounge area leading onto the garden, and the dining opening onto the moat.

Design: Botteri-Connell Office

photo : Gustavo Sosa Pinilla

The Phoenix House, Arizona, USA - 24 Apr 2013
Design: Messana O'Rorke

image from architect
This vast and strikingly beautiful desert landscape is the inspiration for the design. The tectonic mechanisms responsible for the landscape, where mountain ranges seem to slide past each other, is emulated by massive parallel walls of the house.
Contemporary House in Johannesburg , South Africa - 15 Apr 2013
Design: Nico van der Meulen Architects

photo from architect
Another luxury contemporary South African house by this architecture practice: as a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. To enter the private areas of the home, one must cross a bridge above a new internal water feature which breaks the public and private spaces, separating the entrance hall and study from the private home.
House in Muko, Kyoto, Japan - 1 Apr 2013
Design: Fujiwara Architects

photo : Yano Toshiyuki
A mezzanine-floored residence consisting of a single-roomed space, located on a fan-shaped site. The movements of the sun can be felt inside the house all throughout the year. Light coming from the east strikes the louvered boards before entering the house and reaching deep into its interior.
New Residence in South Africa
Design: SAOTA - Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects

photo : SAOTA
7 Dec 2012 - The clients requested a 6-bedroomed family home with understated elegance and quiet grandeur, indoor / outdoor living spaces and uninterrupted views, with a ”lived-in beach-house” feel. The beach-front site is subject to hot summers and moderate winters, with a cooling on-shore breeze, from the North East.
New House in Alicante
Design: Fran Silvestre Arquitectos

photograph : Diego Opazo
19 Nov 2012 - Another modern white coloured residence looking out over the sea, but this residence doesn't follow the normal rules. There is a curious schism in the middle of the property (see the photo above) between hovering volume and terraced outdoor space. Also the proportions are highly unusual, with the 'observatory rectangle' looking out over the Mediterranean giving the feeling of being rather squashed.
New House in Stuttgart
Architect: UNStudio

26 Oct 2012 - The Haus am Weinberg is located in a setting that is at one time rural, yet suburban. The location of the villa affords pastoral views of the stepped terraces of an ancient hillside vineyard on one side and cityscape vistas on the other. The inner circulation, organisation of the views and the programme distribution of the property are determined by a single gesture, ‘the twist’. In the Haus am Weinberg the central twist element supports the main staircase as it guides and organises the main flows through the home.
New House in São Paulo
Architecture: studio mk27 - marcio kogan + renata furlanetto. Interiors: studio mk27 - diana radomysler

11 Aug 2012 - With each new project contemporary architecture is forced to optimize spaces and use the maximum of each square meter of the site. V4 House is a rare anti-example. Its occupation of the land is very far from the maximum coefficient. Laws allow for much larger constructions. The solution adopted, however, dialogues with the dimension of the site, formulating an adequate relation between the scale of the construction and the site.
Key New Residence from 2012
New House at Zimmerberg, Switzerland - added 12 Feb
Design: Rossetti + Wyss Architekten

photo © Juerg Zimmermann, Zurich
The one-story property, which has impressive diagonal views of Lake Zurich and the Alps, is situated on the upper edge of the village, on a longish, slightly sloping site. The construction is defined by a guide wall and angular concrete wall establishing the diagonal panorama towards the lake. The differentiated composition of horizontal and vertical elements confers a sculptural quality to the protective structure.
