The project aims to safeguard the building’s legacy and precious books for future generations. The existing research library will be retained as it is today, with more space for researchers, as will many of the public spaces – the project will open twice as much of the building to the public. The centrepiece of the 5th Avenue and 42nd Street building is the magnificent Rose Reading Room, below which are seven storeys of book stacks.

Developed by Zeckendorf Development with Global Holdings, the 44-storey luxury apartment tower occupies a prestigious location within the green setting of United Nations Plaza, with views of the celebrated modernist UN Headquarters building, the East River and the Manhattan skyline.

New Jersey contractor, Joseph A. Natoli Construction Corporation, announces that it has restored permanent power to the Statue of Liberty National Monument. All lighting and electrical systems in the Statue, including lights at the torch and crown, have now returned to full operation. Power at the Statue was knocked out by Superstorm Sandy nearly two weeks ago.

Norman Foster presented proposals for a masterplan to bring clarity back to Grand Central Terminal at The Municipal Art Society of New York’s annual Summit in New York last night. Grand Central Terminal is one of New York’s greatest landmarks and contains perhaps the city’s finest civic space. However, over time it has become a victim of its own success. A building designed to be used by 75,000 people per day now routinely handles ten times that number with up to a million on peak days.

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) recently announced plans for a new, state-of-the-art medical and graduate education building on the CUMC campus in the Washington Heights community of Northern Manhattan. The new building, with a design led by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler as executive architect, is a 14-storey facility that incorporates technologically advanced classrooms, collaboration spaces, and a modern simulation center, all reflecting how medicine is and will be taught, learned, and practiced in the 21st century.

Hard on the heels of a devastating fire last November, Fire Island Pines has unveiled dramatic and far-reaching plans for the rebuilding of the legendary Pavilion dance club. “We designed the new Pavilion around the community and experiences at Fire Island,” says Matthias Hollwich. “The building forms intimate public spaces out of a single volume. It is carved and rutted pieces of driftwood washed ashore by the sea.”

The New York Landmarks Conservancy presented City Center with a 2012 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award on Wednesday at the New-York Historical Society. The annual Moses Awards celebrate the success of historic preservation and its role in the economic, social and cultural vitality of New York City.
