Architect’s Statement

The Elm Apartments in Dorcas Street South Melbourne comprise a 286 apartment tower, located just off the tree lined St Kilda Road Boulevard. The Elm development is rich in material and articulation, responding to the diversity of the function, scale, mass and typology within the precinct. The design of the tower explores the relationship with both the surrounding buildings and environment, built and natural. Currently under construction, the residential tower has a façade with charcoal finish concrete balconies, vertical garden planter boxes, perforated louvres and windows located and designed to capture the surrounding views. Perforated bronze aluminium sun screens allow for sun shading and privacy to each apartment.
The South facade on Dorcas Street addresses the prominent St. Kilda Road high rise typology with a clean bronzed glazed screen system. Full height windows take advantage of all possible natural light, with high level apartments having views toward the Kings Domain gardens. The Wells Place facade (a laneway facade which is most commonly ignored in building developments) is the development’s ‘north facing garden’ with an elm leaf images woven intricately across the facade, back through the podium levels and through to its roots at the entry foyer. Green planting screens or feature walls, clearly identify the entry to the apartments amongst the vibrant street level retail areas.
