A sector-leading UK manufacturing company has appointed Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP) to design a new £2.5 million research and development lab at its Lancashire HQ.
FWP, one of the leading architecture and design practices in the Northwest, is designing the cutting-edge, three-storey facility for Sika Liquid Plastics Limited‘s (SLPL) operation in Preston and is aiming to submit a planning application early in 2012.
Sika Liquid Plastics is the leader in its field producing an extensive range of high performance, technologically advanced roofing systems with prestigious contracts in the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

High-profile projects include Selfridges, the Tate Britain art gallery in London, the NEC Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, Royal Preston Hospital and East Midlands Airport.
The industry-leading firm has been a part of the global Swiss-based international chemicals giant Silka group since 2009. This R&D project is a major investment in its future and demonstrates a clear commitment to its Preston operation, which was opened in 1963.
The state-of-the-art 12,500 sq ft laboratories will become a centre of excellence for new technologies and will be built on land at Sika Liquid Plastics’ Miller Street headquarters and involves the partial demolition of an old Victorian weaving shed.
FWP, with offices in Preston and Manchester, is delighted to be working on a project set to give the local economy and its manufacturing sector a major boost.
The practice has extensive experience in both master-planning and designing major projects for a wide range of industrial and commercial ventures.
Its successful projects include the £10 million headquarters of Patak Spices and a £6.5 million HQ and warehouse development for international cookware manufacturer Meyer Prestige.
Martin Whittle, partner of FWP, said: “We have been working with both Sika Liquid Plastics and council planning officers on the project and we are about to submit a detailed feasibility study as part of that process.
“This is a significant investment for Sika Liquid Plastics and highlights the importance of the Preston operation to its parent group. It is also really good news for the city and its manufacturing sector.
“We are aiming to submit a formal application for planning permission to the city council in the first-half of next year, hopefully around March.
“We are working to create a state-of-the-art R&D facility, providing a 21st-Century environment for its team to help the company remain at the forefront of its sector’s technology.”
