Upper Brook Street
Building - info from Makin Architecture Nov07
Landmark Building is full of Life

Award winning Manchester Architects Makin Architectures landmark
building on Upper Brook Street has been handed over on schedule and is
already occupied by over 350 students starting the new term at university.
That in itself is pretty impressive, but its not only students who
are now calling Nick Everton House home as a further 116 two bedroom apartments
designed to provide local key workers (such as junior doctors and nurses),
with affordable accommodation, are also proving to be extremely popular.

Makin Architecture Director Dragana Opacic said...It is great to
see the completed building is alive with light and activity from the hundreds
of residents already calling the building home. In spite of challenges
posed by cost and time constraints and a design parameters set by outline
planning permission awarded in 2002, we saw this as a great opportunity
to create a building, that would act as a catalyst to rejuvenate this
previously neglected urban area and we can see its already beginning
to make a difference to the neighbourhoods sprit and feel.

Built on a tight site at the intersection of Plymouth Grove, Grafton Street
and Upper Brook Street, the Makin Architecture design combines the best
of function and form. Making the most of the triangular footprint, the
structure wraps around an elevated central courtyard, whilst rising from
8 to 9 and then 13 stories the elevations also vary in composition, which
in effect, breaks up the mass and creates interest. At street level there
is space for offices and shops, which will bring vibrancy and hustle and
bustle as well as a real sense of community.
