HKR ARCHITECTS APPOINTED FOR BODDINGTONS BREWERY REDEVELOPMENT

HKR Architects, the international architecture and design practice, has been appointed by Ask Developments and Realty Estates for first phase redevelopment of the Boddingtons Brewery site on Bury New Road.

The 7.4 acre Boddingtons Brewery site adjacent to the MEN arena, which closed as a working brewery in 2005, is to be transformed into a thriving mixed use destination with offices, a hotel, micro brewery and retail focused around a new pedestrian square.

The site appointment, which saw HKR beat off stiff competition from Glen Howells, HOK, and Sheppard Robson amongst others, is the second brewery scheme contract the company has won in the last six months following a high-profile contest to mastermind the design for Artisan’s Brown Bros. building in Salford.

Ask Developments’ Executive Director, Alan Burke said: “Whilst all of the submitted designs were excellent, HKR’s surpassed all our expectations aesthetically and commercially. The brewery is an iconic site in Manchester so its redevelopment and regeneration of the area is going to be closely monitored throughout the project.”

Jon Matthews, Director at HKR, added: “We’re honoured to be working on this historically significant development. For HKR, as a Manchester business, the Boddingtons Brewery win is particularly poignant – a family member was Chief Brewer until the brewery closed – so we are especially proud to be working with Ask on this project.”
