BDP's Manchester
studio, designed by BDP's architects and engineers, is the first naturally
ventilated office building in Manchester to achieve an Excellent BREEAM
rating.

Judges praised BDP's new studio for pulling off a "commercially
viable, high-quality office building in functional, aesthetic and
environmental terms" and creating "a strongly characterised
and beautifully detailed flexible workplace". In addition the
RIBA also highlighted the fact that the building was an exemplar of
low-carbon and sustainable design and made particular reference to
its natural ventilation system.

Manchester's Greenest Office Building wins RIBA Accolade
The Manchester studio of BDP has continued its award winning year,
scooping an award at this week's 2009 RIBA Awards for the North West,
for their bespoke BDP Studio in Manchester
The win is the latest in a series of high-profile awards for BDP,
the UK's largest design practice, and means the Manchester studio
has enjoyed three successive years of RIBA Northwest Awards.
The RIBA Northwest Awards are held annually to celebrate buildings
considered to be of high architectural merit. This year, 13 out of
31 nominated schemes from across the North West were placed on the
shortlist.
BDP's Liverpool studio also won an award for their Liverpool One Masterplan.
The judging panel, comprising of Philip Gumuchdjian, of Gumuchdjian
Architects, Sir Duncan Michael of Arup and Rod Hughes of Ad-hoc Associates,
visited each scheme, taking into account the criteria of budget, size,
complexity of brief, detail, invention/originality, contract type,
client satisfactory, sustainability, social factors and delight, before
deciding on the winners.

ventilation system. The judges also credited BDP for creating the
first BREEAM Excellent -rated office building in Manchester.
Gavin Elliott, Chairman at BDP's Manchester studio, said; "It's
a great feat just to be shortlisted for the RIBA Awards, so to win
two awards is a real achievement for BDP. We're extremely proud of
the creativity and sustainability of our design. We're extremely proud
of these awards and the recognition it gives to the practice's contribution
to the quality of the built environment in the region.
"The practice began in Preston in 1961, so it's wonderful that
BDP has been recognized by RIBA North West for our work for the third
year in a row.
"We hope that our achievements will bring to greater attention
the influential role of designers in shaping the region, and delivering
sustainable environments for current and future generations."
Winners of an RIBA Award will be eligible to be shortlisted for the
RIBA Stirling Prize.
