Whitechapel Vision Nominated for National Award

New plans to regenerate the Whitechapel area have been recognised at the 2014 national Planning Awards.

Whitechapel Vision will rejuvenate the area with new town centre uses, public spaces, and activity stretching across both sides of the Whitechapel Road and beyond. Its plans to combine the area’s historic, cultural and community assets to create a unique part of 21st century London has seen it recognised at the Planning Awards, where it has been shortlisted for the Award for Strategic Planning.

The masterplan for Whitechapel Vision, which was developed with BDP, can be seen here.

The prestigious awards ceremony will be hosted on Tuesday, November 18 at the Royal Society of Medicine, and will celebrate the outstanding achievements in planning work by local authorities, consultants, developers, lawyers, voluntary and neighbourhood groups and all other key players working in the built environment.

The Whitechapel Vision plans, which were launched in March 2014, have generated a huge amount of support and excitement from residents and businesses, along with strategic partners involved in the delivery of this project.

Delivering the vision
So far, Tower Hamlets is working hard to make this vision a reality. The council has created a new regeneration team, who are currently working with a number of organisations to transform the area by undertaking live planning discussions with key landowners; consulting with residents; and working closely with the Whitechapel Vision strategic partners who are:

• Greater London Authority (GLA)
• Transport for London (TfL)
• Barts Health NHS Trust
• Queen Mary University of London (QMUL)
• L&Q London Housing Association
• Sainsbury’s

Key achievements so far include:

• the launch of the masterplan and new regeneration team
• the establishment of a Strategic Partnership Board to guide and deliver regeneration
• triggering over £100 million of private land acquisitions since March 2013
• live planning negotiations on five major development sites with a pipeline of approximately 2,500 new homes coming
• allocation of £200,000 towards design scoping and consultation on the redevelopment of Whitechapel Road.

Once plans have been completed, the Whitechapel Vision masterplan will see:

• up to 3500 new homes delivered by 2025, including a substantial number of family and affordable homes
• 5000 new jobs
• the transformation of the Whitechapel Road
• seven new public squares and open spaces

Speaking about the nomination, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “It is fantastic news to hear that our vision for Whitechapel has been shortlisted for an award, alongside other major regeneration projects across the country. When we consulted with residents and stakeholders earlier this year, we were impressed to see so much support, excitement and enthusiasm for this project.”

Cllr Rabina Khan, cabinet member for housing and development, said: “Whitechapel has always been a visionary place. In fact, it is home to the oldest business enterprise in the world – the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Our plans to regenerate this area are ambitious; they are grand; and they will firmly reassert how brilliant Whitechapel is to all of London and the world. This is why we have been recognised nationally for these plans!”
