Tower of London Hotel Accommodation

Bennetts Associates has completed its second major project for Mint Hotels – a four-star 583-bedroom hotel in Pepys Street close to the Tower of London.

The building takes the form of a broad courtyard, with the facades following the historic streetlines. Visitors approach the hotel through a substantial external colonnade, entering a double-height lobby that occupies the entire courtyard space. A vaulted glass roof marks the division between the public areas and the bedroom floors. Perched on top of the 12 storey building is the SkyLounge, a dramatic structure that cantilevers over the lower levels with spectacular 360º views over the City, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Thames.

Other key elements of the project include:

Above lobby level and visible through the glazed roof, the south-facing wall of the courtyard is lined with plants, making it the tallest green wall in Europe.

Extensive landscaped roof terraces are accessible from the SkyLounge.

In addition to the SkyLounge, the hotel has a major high quality restaurant, two further bars at ground level and highly flexible conference facilities.

Bedrooms follow the Mint Hotel pattern of high quality, well-appointed layouts, with a number of special rooms or suites in exceptional locations.

Main facades are of natural stone, in common with most neighbouring buildings. The top two floors are set back and form part of the landscaped roof, with planted walls.

Most of the structure, cladding and all of the bathrooms were pre-fabricated off site.

Rab Bennetts, Director of Bennetts Associates, said: “The Tower of London hotel is the second major project we’ve completed for Mint Hotels in London, with a third scheme in Amsterdam nearing competition. The client’s ethos – which is a really intelligent blend of consistent high quality within site specific buildings – is evident throughout this project. At the Tower of London hotel, we’re particularly pleased with the sequence of spaces experienced by the visitor, from the dramatic effect of the courtyard space to the incredible views from the SkyLounge.”

The architect’s first project for Mint Hotels (then known as City Inn) was the multi-award-winning Westminster hotel completed in 2003. Mint Hotel Amsterdam will open next month.
