Tarling Estate Regeneration
Stock Woolstencroft LLP and S333

The regeneration of the Tarling Estate - a compact 0.72 hectare site which, despite its central, well-connected location, lacked vibrancy and quality - includes the extension and enhancement of an important local street and the creation of new public spaces, shops, services and facilities as well as the provision of a diverse range of modern new homes.

The project was secured by Stock Woolstencroft through a staged competition organised by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) and subsequent close working with the LBTH housing department led to a definitive housing mix, targeted very specifically at the needs of the local area and population.

The complete programme is accommodated within six blocks ranging from three to four storey buildings to a 20-storey tower. The street based urban form with a terrace of family homes, a perimeter block and the high rise block focused on two new streets, ensures simplified access arrangements. Of the affordable rent units, 43 are family sized, comprising large five and six bed contemporary terrace homes directly addressing the street, and three and four bed maisonettes stacked with access to private front doors. Importantly none of these are more than half a flight from street level with all lower units benefiting from level access via a shared courtyard.

Work commenced on-site in the autumn of 2005 and completed in May 2008.
