February 2017 Shortlisted designs for national prayer landmark competition revealed
The shortlist for the RIBA competition to design an ambitious new landmark made of a million bricks has been announced. At a parliamentary reception on Tuesday 7 February, the following five shortlisted architecture teams were revealed:
W22 – Snug Architects (from Southampton)
W80 – Stefano Baseggio (from Italy)
W95 – Quattro Design Architects (from Gloucester)
W144 – Mathias Bank Stigsen, Asbjørn Staunstrup Lund & Thomas Sigsgaard Jensen (people’s choice from Denmark)
W146 – Luke Macnab, Andrew Wardrope & Thu Nguyen-Phuoc (with support from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios from Bath)
The ‘National Prayer Landmark’ will consist of a million bricks, designed torepresent a million answered prayers.
The shortlisted designs were selected from 134 entries from 24 countries; the entries were whittled down to 4 including a public vote winner.
The shortlist was announced at a reception hosted by the Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, a member of the judging panel and Chair of the APPG for Faith and Society.
Announcing the unveiling of the five shortlisted designs, Richard Gamble, Director of the Wall of Answered Prayer said: “To be in Parliament this afternoon to unveil the five shortlisted concept designs is a great thrill, as this showcases the amazing talent of our finalists and brings together our friends and supporters, who have walked the journey since we launched our Kickstarter last year.
After 13 years of waiting, it’s now exciting to see what the concept design of this National Prayer Landmark might be and the way in which the brief has been interpreted. I believe seeing something of the design will enable those who wish to contribute to the project what it could look like.We are now gathering significant momentum and now we press on to locate and finalise the site.”
The Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP added: “I am delighted to sponsor the Reception in Parliament to unveil the shortlisted designs – as submitted to the global competition – for the Wall of Answered Prayer. As judges, meeting at the Royal Institute of British Architects last November, we had a tough job whittling down the entries. I am particularly pleased to welcome finalists from Denmark and Italy, as well as from the UK. The team will now be encouraging people to contribute experiences of answered prayer to go on the bricks. Those who do contribute will know that this new national landmark will look like one of the designs we unveiled today.”
