Proposals for the Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy have been granted planning consent. Designed by Jestico + Whiles, the new school will rework the existing 19th century French Hospital building in Victoria Park Village and add a new four storey block to create a secondary school for 800 students following the ethos and philosophy of its existing facility Mossbourne Community Academy.

The existing building first constructed in 1865 has operated as a school since 1949 and will be converted to accommodate the general teaching requirements of the new Academy, with specialist and communal facilities provided in the new building. The existing building with its grand staircase, top lit circulation and ornate Gothic features will also accommodate the school’s library in the original Court Room of the French Hospital. The former Chapel will be converted to a multi-functional drama space.

The new four-storey building will accommodate a sports hall and assembly facilities. These spaces will be open to the public, providing new community facilities to the Hackney residents and emphasising Mossbourne’s mission to enhance local amenities. Dining, performance and specialist teaching facilities will also be housed in the new building.

Jestico + Whiles worked closely with Mossbourne Community Academy to develop a design capable of delivering the educational vision of the school whilst responding to the constraints of the budget, the historic hospital building and the site.

Jude Harris, Associate Director at Jestico + Whiles said: “We have worked closely with the client and local authority to design a building which is sympathetic to the site and its heritage status alongside the aspirations of Mossbourne Community Academy. We are extremely pleased to have received consent for the scheme and we strongly believe it will provide an exceptional education facility for the community of South Hackney.”

Cllr Rita Krishna said: “We’re delighted to be able to build a brand new secondary school in an area of our borough where demand is projected to be particularly high in the coming years. Mossbourne Victoria Park is one of the ways we’re planning for the future to make sure we can meet this need with high quality schools.

“Despite this being an immensely complicated project involving a compact site and a listed building, with a very limited budget from the government, we’ve been able to adapt the plans to take on board residents’ concerns. I hope this means we’ll be able to satisfy both residents living near the site and the families who desperately want reassurance that there will be a good, local school to which they can send their children in years to come.

“Mossbourne Community Academy has achieved some phenomenal results and I’m sure its second school will do equally as well.”

Work will now start on site in Autumn 2013. The Academy will open for its first cohort of students in September 2014.
