magma architecture’s Olympic and Paralympic shooting arenas have been distinguished with a 2013 AIA UK Excellence in Design Award.

The shooting arenas were the only buildings of the London 2012 Games to be selected by this year’s jury chaired by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw.

The AIA UK is the UK chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards are given annually to buildings located in the UK or designed by architects based in the UK.

Launched in 1987, this Prize is co-funded by the EU Culture Programme and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. It is granted every two years to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe.

New images of London 2012 Shooting venue show indoor ranges in place and colourful cladding close to completion

Latest images released by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) show that the London 2012 Shooting venue is on schedule to complete by the end of the year.

The temporary venue, located at the famous Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, is one of the last remaining new arenas to be built for the Games and will stage Shooting, Paralympic Shooting and Paralympic Archery across three indoor ranges and three open air ranges. It is on track to complete in December – ahead of international shooting test events next spring.

All three indoor ranges (a 25-metre, combined 50/10-metre and a finals range) are now structurally complete using around 1,200 tonnes of steel and clad in plywood, while work will shortly start on building the open air ranges at the southwest London site. Spectator seating enclosures for the 25-metre and combined ranges are also in place, with the finals enclosure on schedule to finish by November.

The enclosures, which are rented and can be reused after the Games, are being clad in around 18,000sqm of phthalate-free pvc membrane that gives the structures their unique appearance. Vibrantly coloured openings that help break-up the white facades create the tension, in addition to providing natural ventilation and light.

ODA Chairman John Armitt said: “The Shooting Venue will be one of the ODA’s last sporting arenas to complete and the progress made to date is impressive given the scale of the ranges and enclosures. The innovative design contrasts excellently to the historic setting of the Royal Artillery Barracks that spectators will see as they enter the venue.”

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: “Spectators going to see Shooting and Paralympic Archery events will get to experience the Games in a colourful and modern venue situated in a world-class location that will inspire them as much as the athletes competing next summer.”

Once completed the venue will be handed over to LOCOG for overlay works, which includes installing the seating across the ranges and constructing back-of-house facilities.

Immediately after the Games, the venue will be dismantled as quickly as possible and the site returned to its original condition, after which it will be handed back to the Ministry of Defence as the landowner.

London 2012 is working with the Government and other partners to identify opportunities where elements of the venue and sports equipment could be reused after the Games.

Royal Artillery Barracks Shooting Venue – Background Information

The foundations were created by driving reclaimed gas pipelines into the ground. A steel frame connects the piles together to negate the use of concrete that can cause subsidence and damage to the earth when the venue is demounted.

Three outdoor ranges will host the Olympic Shotgun competitions, which will then be transformed to stage Paralympic Archery afterwards.

The contractor for the venue is Hertfordshire-based John Sisk & Sons.

It is estimated that more than 104,000 spectators will watch the competitions during the Games – equating to around 4,000 people every day.

Ranges

– Finals range: This building will be used for the finals of all of the long range rifle scopes and Pistol events.

– 25m Range: This partially enclosed range will be used for the qualifying rounds of the 25m Pistol and 25m Rapid Fire Pistol events.

– 10m/50m Range: This partially enclosed range will be used for the qualifying rounds of the 10m Air Rifle and 10m Air Pistol events, and.50m Rifle and 50m Pistol events.

– Shotgun Ranges: All three open air ranges will be used for qualifying for the Shotgun Skeet, Trap and Double Trap competitions, with the centre range being used for the finals.

Shooting, Paralympic Shooting and Paralympic Archery

– Shooting: In Pistol and Rifle events, competitors fire at a target from a set distance within an enclosed range. In Shotgun events, athletes fire at a moving clay target at varying distances.

– Paralympic Archery: Sport is split into Standing and Wheelchair events. Athletes fire at a target from a 70m distance within an outdoor range.

– Dates: The Shooting competition is scheduled for 28 July to 6 August 2012 when the venue will be open to spectators. Paralympic Shooting and archery competition is scheduled to take place from 30 August to 6 September 2012.
