studio octopi have been granted planning permission for a new house in Dulwich, a single storey extension in south east London. The extension’s appearance and detailing is a direct response to the well preserved 1930s architecture of the property. The 1930s were a rampant period of homebuilding, strong orthogonal forms with repetitive and economic structural rhythms dominated the architecture and furnishings.
Situated within The Dulwich Estate, the extension’s Douglas Fir structure is a continuing theme within our work. A subtle shift in the alignment of the rear elevation’s columns plus the engagement with the existing structure provide an intriguing dialogue with the period property.

Recognised districts in Dulwich include Dulwich Village (which includes the traditional village centre) ; West Dulwich (which is a mainly residential area bordering West Norwood and Tulse Hill) and Herne Hill (the Southwark half, which forms the North Dulwich Triangle, borders Brixton, Denmark Hill, Loughborough Junction and Tulse Hill).
East Dulwich, despite its name, is not part of Dulwich, but is a subdivision of Peckham.
