Heron Tower - Building Description
Heron Tower synthesises urban concerns with innovative technology
and environmental responsibility. Set within the City cluster on a
prominent site at the junction of Bishopsgate & Camomile Street,
the building will provide the highly flexible work space that is demanded
by the latest generation of City occupiers. Responding to both the
technical and social demands of the modern workplace, the building
is organised around a series of office "villages". At the
heart of each is a triple height atrium.

Unlike the earlier generation of tall buildings in the City whose
monolithic forms are mute within their urban context, Heron Tower
will be a transparent and articulate structure. To the south, a slender
lift core is animated by movement of glazed lift cars, two of which
provide access to the new public restaurant at roof level. From the
Bishopsgate approach, the building provides a marker to the northern
edge of the city core. The face of the building reveals the internal
organisation of office villages. Its richly textured northern elevation
displays the internal organisation of stacked atria. To the east and
west, a bio-climatic ventilated façade provides an energy efficient
and highly transparent enclosure.

The current site, a busy traffic island with narrow pavements, is
inhospitable to pedestrians. The proposed building will offer significant
improvements through the pedestrianisation of the section of Houndsditch
to the north of the site. This space, animated by planting and cafés,
will enhance the setting of the Grade 2* St. Botolph's Church opposite.
An arcade along Bishopsgate provides a generous footpath to this busy
street.

For its user, the building will set a new standard of accommodation
in the City. For London, Heron Tower will be the first bespoke multitenant
high rise providing a powerful magnet for attracting foreign tenants.
The public will benefit from the quality of the enhanced civic realm
with its new retail and restaurant facilities at the base and top
of the building.
Heron Tower challenges the conventional typology of the high rise
to provide a unique addition to London's architecture.
