HKR ARCHITECTS GIVEN GO-AHEAD BY PLANNERS FOR THE GROUCHO CLUB
15 April 2008

HKR Architects, the award winning international architecture and design practice, has been given the go-ahead by the planners for its designs for the refurbishment and extension of the original media and celebrity haunt, the Groucho Club in Soho.

Planning permission has been granted for its plans which include a rear extension from the basement to the 4th floor, allowing for the inclusion of a new lift shaft and staircase, and the addition of new bedrooms. All of the existing bedrooms and bathrooms will also be refurbished.

Work on the infamous venue – which first opened its doors in 1985 and became the benchmark for modern members’ clubs – is due to start this summer, and will continue for several months, with the club remaining open for much of this period.

Gordon Pickering, CEO of the London office of HKR commented: “We’ve enjoyed working on this project for the past 12 months and steering it through the planning process. The enhancements to the Groucho will ensure not only that the members experience is enhanced, but that it remains a lively beacon of individuality in the 21st century.”

The Groucho Club was named after Groucho Marx because of his famed remark that ‘I wouldn’t want to join any club that would have me as a member’. This was in keeping with the spirit of the club that was opened as an ‘antidote’ to the members clubs that were more common place at the time. This fresh new ethos and creative environment made the club an instant hit with many artists, actors and musicians.
