Work has started on a new £20 million cutting-edge building designed by Stride Treglown, at Goldsmiths, University of London in New Cross.

The building, to be completed in summer 2010, will house the Department of Media and Communications, allowing different sections of the department currently scattered across the campus, to centralise into a single purpose-built space including radio, TV and photographic studios. Students studying other courses will also benefit from the development as there will be a 250 seat lecture theatre, 120 seat screening room, meeting spaces and a café with outside seating.

The prominent site overlooks the College Green and faces the listed Richard Hoggart building from where the college originated.

Although the academic accommodation requirements have influenced much of the form of the building, the concourse and cladding materials gave the opportunity to express the building’s function more creatively.

The north elevation incorporates a projection screen to display students’ work. The use of multi tonal terracotta rainscreen cladding can be interpreted as ‘pixels’ and the expression of natural ventilation through chimneys on the concourse roof demonstrates the sustainable aspirations of the project.

The building is aiming to achieve a “very good” BREEAM rating. Features include heating sourced from a Biomass boiler and extensive use of natural ventilation aided by four large wind towers on the roof as well as bat and bird boxes. Recycled materials will be used in internal floor finishes and a high proportion of the construction materials will be able to be recycled.

The contractor is Willmott Dixon.
