The demolition of the old Euston Station building in 1962 was labelled "one of the greatest acts of Post-War architectural vandalism in Britain", approved by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Many, including Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, tried to save the building including the characterful Euston Arch. This campaign led to the formation of The Victorian Society and the modern conservation movement in England.
