Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects £31m student residence complex
on the Royal Albert Dock for the University of East London has been completed.

The University, which has recorded a 40% increase in student numbers over
the past three years, commissioned Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects to
design the landmark development on a breathtaking waterside site at the
heart of the developing Thames Gateway and a major conference facility.

The scheme, which overlooks London City Airport across the water, comprises
800 flats and self contained studios within five seven storey blocks perpendicular
to the dock. A series of informal collegiate courtyard gardens line the
dock edge. A café and a shop complete the development which is
part of a £110 million campus expansion programme at the University
of East London.

Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects has a strong track record delivering
high quality academic and residential learner-focussed environments including
many on waterfront sites. FBM were lead designers for the project. Other
members of the project team include Gardiner and Theobald, Gleeds, Waterman
Partnership and DCL Consulting.

The scheme, which has received the backing of CABE and the GLA Architecture
and Urbanism Unit was approved by the London Borough of Newham in March
2005 and was built under a Design & Build Contract by HBG Construction.
Fraser Brown MacKenna were novated to HBG and retained by the client as
Executive Architect.
