The Architecture Foundation announces the winner of the hotly contested competition to transform the public realm alongside the new ‘Printworks’ development on Amelia Street in Elephant & Castle.

Architects dallaspierce quintero, clinched the top spot with their proposal, ‘Abundant Amelia’, which is designed to encourage the local community to grow all of its own food produce. The plan will also flood the area with exciting features like window boxes, climbing plants and feature lighting to illuminate prominent trees.

dallaspierce quintero, said: “Our approach to the competition was based on returning a sense of ownership to the public realm for all users, which has been enthusiastically received by the judges and public.

By using the idea of the community growing its own food as a strategy for designing the public realm we seek to make interventions that bring maximum social benefit and human interaction to what are often over looked as in-between spaces.

We are very grateful to the Pullens Tenants and Residents Association, The Architecture Foundation, First Base and The London Borough of Southwark for organising this design competition and hope this may encourage more creative initiatives using Section 106 agreements throughout the country.”

The competition was judged by a prestigious panel that included Evening Standard architecture critic and competitions consultant to the AF, Rowan Moore; Southwark Councillor Caroline Pidgeon; and Eleanor Purser, Senior Regeneration Manager for the newly formed Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). North Seven were chosen by the jury as ‘runners up’ for their Park Road scheme.

Prior to selecting the winner, the shortlisted entries were displayed at a public exhibition to allow residents from the local community to view and feedback on the plans.
