20 Jun 2012 45 Park Lane London Paul Davis + Partners collaborates with The Office of Thierry W. Despont to create a modern classic at 45 Park Lane Design: The Office of Thierry W. Despont / Paul Davis + Partners The Dorchester Collection’s 45 Park Lane hotel in Mayfair has opened following the conversion and extension of the former Playboy Club, designed by New York practice The Office of Thierry W. Despont, working with London architects Paul Davis + Partners. photos : Adam Parker The designer and architect have transformed the building’s exterior which dramatically change and lighten the existing structure whilst greatly improving thermal performance by means of a new external fin system designed to create solar shading. To comply with Westminster Council’s request to include public artwork, the Hyde Park elevation features a large full height artwork of undulating burnished metal panels stretching from the first to eighth floors. A contemporary take on the art deco style, reminiscent of the Dorchester next door, aimed at a much younger contemporary clientele. The hotel comprises 5,859sqm over eleven levels with 45 luxury rooms and suites, also a penthouse, all have views Hyde Park. The challenge of the project was to explore solutions that could turn a 1960’s building into a sustainable project for the 21st Century. The scheme has benefited from pioneering fire strategy solutions.
