Liverpool One Masterplan : UK’s top architectural award shortlists masterplan

The Liverpool One Masterplan delivered a significant regeneration development with 40 individually designed buildings, including 1.4million ft² (130,000 m²) of retail space for the city centre together with a range of other uses.

The RIBA praised BDP for the Liverpool One Masterplan and announced that it had “single-handedly reversed the fortunes of the city by bringing a new social and economic vibrancy to what was 42 acres of derelict but historic buildings at its heart”.

Subsequently this had resulted in a “vibrant and economically successful retail, leisure and mixed-use quarter” and “an entirely revitalised city centre that now connects properly with the docks.” BDP Architects were also credited for their ability to “work with a broad range of architects to evolve the plan and deliver buildings of a very high quality”.

Museum of Liverpool – a controversial building, especially when it was being built, due to its proximity to The Three Graces, the city’s famous trio of stone buildings that face out over the River Mersey to the south west. The design by the well known Danish architecture studio was bold and angular, using modern materials that seem at odds with the gentle patina of the stone structures to the West. The museum is also located close to The Albert Docks and the Tate art gallery, sited a little to the East. The Albert Docks have a dark red colouring and again the contrast to the new architecture is quite marked.
