3 Jul 2009 Iraqi Soccer Stadium - Development Proposal A British construction consortium are awaiting a final decision from the Prime Minister of Iraq, Nouri Kamil Mohammed Hassan al-Maliki for the design and construction of a state of the art 65,000 all-seat soccer stadium in the city of Basrah.
![]() The stadium is required as the city is to host the Gulf Cup of Nations in 2013, a bi- annual football tournament between the Gulf nations of Iraq, Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. The consortium, Harlow Integrated Developments, is part of Harlow International, a British company with an established presence in Iraq. The consortium consists of constructors and consultants from the UK who have established pedigrees of working internationally. They consist of: - Harlow International - Consortium Leader - Gleeds - Cost Consultants - Jordan + Bateman Architects - Architects - Atelier Ten - Building Services Engineers - Samuely - Structural Engineers - David Jarvis Associates - Landscape Architects - TPS Carillion - Counter Terrorism Consultants - Al Futtaim Carillion - Procurement and Project Planning Specialists. The consortium is delighted to announce that Wembley Stadium Consultancy has recently joined the team. They will act as professional advisors helping to deliver a world-class venue as well as providing advice to the Minister for Youth and Sport in the organisation and operation of the stadium for the tournament. The consortium has made a commitment to train local resources in Basrah and encourage British businesses to operate and invest in Iraq.
![]() The stadium has been designed to FIFA standards and will form the centrepiece for a new Sports City planned for the site in Basrah. 20 teams originally bid for the project in December 2008, only 5 teams were selected to go forward to the second stage in March 2009. The project proposals have been internationally vetted and Harlow Integrated Developments believe they have come top in all assessments. A spokesperson for Harlow Integrated Developments said that a decision needs to be made very soon (by July 1st 2009) in order for the project to stand any chance of being ready for the games in January 2013 Basrah Stadium Iraq images / information from Jordan + Bateman Architects Iraqi Architecture Famous Iraqi architect : Zaha Hadid Architecture Developments in adjacent countries: Saudi Arabian Buildings Jordan Buildings Kuwait Buildings Dubai Architecture Office Buildings School Buildings University Buildings Architects World Architecture : e-architect - a guide to key buildings across the globe Comments / photos for the Basrah Stadium Iraq Architecture page welcome: info@e-architect.co.uk Basrah Stadium Building : page - adrian welch / isabelle lomholt |
