The stadium is required as the city is to host the Gulf Cup of Nations in 2013, a bi- annual football tournament between the Gulf nations of Iraq, Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

The consortium, Harlow Integrated Developments, is part of Harlow International, a British company with an established presence in Iraq. The consortium consists of constructors and consultants from the UK who have established pedigrees of working internationally.

The consortium is delighted to announce that Wembley Stadium Consultancy has recently joined the team. They will act as professional advisors helping to deliver a world-class venue as well as providing advice to the Minister for Youth and Sport in the organisation and operation of the stadium for the tournament.

The consortium has made a commitment to train local resources in Basrah and encourage British businesses to operate and invest in Iraq.

The stadium has been designed to FIFA standards and will form the centrepiece for a new Sports City planned for the site in Basrah. 20 teams originally bid for the project in December 2008, only 5 teams were selected to go forward to the second stage in March 2009.

The project proposals have been internationally vetted and Harlow Integrated Developments believe they have come top in all assessments.

A spokesperson for Harlow Integrated Developments said that a decision needs to be made very soon (by July 1st 2009) in order for the project to stand any chance of being ready for the games in January 2013
