Wooden Wave Cultural Center, Taiwan

Wooden Wave Building

A building shaped like a wave...we've seen buildings evoking ships and boats, and recently quite a few waves (for example Zaha Hadid's Riverside Museum in Glasgow), but this is a wooden wave frozen in time and dissected...in other words not really a wave at all. Metaphors are very popular in Far East architecture, an attempt to find meaning through form that can be dangerous. Why? Because if you get it wrong it becomes an empty 'soundbite' that can weaken a major use of resources and a focus for community, with serious consequences. The architects describe their process in this way, "Designing the cultural center was a task to reveal what could be the image of modern and contemporary Taiwan Architecture. Cultural center is a good place to express the identity of the Taiwan."

Design: TheeAe LTD.
Daegu Church Building
image from architect

The site is close to the downtown area of Daegu, one of the largest cities in South Korea. With a budget of about about $2.8 m for a 3,500sqm building. The architects tried to create a landmark in the town by avoiding the usual styles of church design in Korea, such as red bricks, symmetric plan, the pointy roof and the cross at the top.

Copenhagen Harbour Architecture, Denmark - article by Rebecca Breun for e-architect
"Over the last decade the harbour and ports around Copenhagen have been vacated, and the city has launched an impressive attempt not only to link the newly developed areas on the island of Amager, situated opposite Copenhagen proper, to the old city centre, but also to animate the waterfront on both sides...Until recently only two bridges linked the two city parts together, and the waterfront itself was often not open to the public. Now it is possible to walk, bicycle or roller-skate along most of the front with two additional bridges linking new areas together while making sure you don’t have to walk back on yourself."

What you need to know about safety and diamond blades
Home repairs or construction sites can be dangerous places. Do you know that a person is killed every four days and many more are injured because of not taking seriously basic safety measures? Also, diamond saw blades can be a real threat if you don’t care about reading instructions manuals.
Don’t let your work go to waste and follow some basic safety rules.
First: Legal obligations Ask you employer about anything you don’t consider irrelevant while he does. The boss is in charge of providing legal care to all employees. Specially when working with blades or any other sharp construction equipment. As an employee, you have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act to take care of all of your employees and, of course, yourself.
