Walking along the running track of the Lingnan University, there stands the newly constructed Student Activities Centre, which was completed in 2007.

Designed by AD+RG Architecture Design and Research Group Ltd., the Student Activities Centre is constituted of irregular lines and resembles the form of the topology of the slope behind to blend in with the natural surroundings. The Chinese character “?” (“Ling”) in ‘Lingnan’ is decomposed to become a facade pattern on the surface, accumulating in a stronger sense of identity.

Taking advantage of the openness of the site, natural lighting is introduced to the function rooms to support the vibrant activities of the students. With the use of full height windows, skylights and internal courtyards, a spatial linkage is created along the vista, the greenery and the sky to form a continuous landscape.

Skylight has been designed with its peripheral location to welcome the daylight to cast on the walls, diffuse into the space and meanwhile avoid glare to the sports players. The size of the skylight is carefully controlled with roller blinds to avoid heating up the space during the summer.

The use of skylight, together with the 6-metre ceiling void and natural ventilation, is to improve the sanitary conditions and spatial quality in the two changing rooms.

This new Student Activities Centre indeed supports students’ active university life and has become one of the icons of the Lingnan University.
