Sajos is the centre of culture and administration for the Sami, the only indigenous people in EU. The building creates better possibilities for the Sami in Finland to preserve and develop their own language, culture and business. Tampere Waterfront Development, central Finland BIG picture from architect Tampere Waterfront Buildings - 8 May 2012 BIG wins the competition to revitalize the city center of the third largest city in Finland. The invited design contest calls for a strong architectural master plan, comprising residential, commercial and cultural programme, forming a new urban area around the existing Ratina sports stadium in one of the most rapidly developing regions in Finland. BIG is selected as a winner of the competition by Finnish developers Rakennustomisto Pohjola & YH-Länsi, among proposals from Swedish Wingårdhs, German Behnisch Partner and Finnish JKMM. Helsinki Architecture Walking Tours photo : City of Helsinki Finnish Architecture Design Contests SAFA Architecture Competition - Otaniemi Central Campus Aalto University Properties Ltd organised an open international competition for the design of the Otaniemi central campus area. The competition was divided into two phases. This Finnish Architecture Competition can be entered by persons who have the right to practice architect’s profession in the country where they qualified or in the country where they practice the profession. The total prize sum was EUR 300,000. The cross like shape of this simple villa reaches towards four very different views. The space is open and defined at the same time. The exterior is treated black and to contrast the interior is very light. The building is insulated well and heated by wood from own forest only. There is only solar electricity and no running water. Vegetables are grown on own land and the lake surrounding the island is famous as a good fishing spot. The simple and ascetic life at the countryside differs dramatically from the hectic city life. Ski Resort Levi Design: BIG image from architects Lapland Ski Resort The future Ski Village will transform the existing Levi ski resort into a world class destination, offering top quality accommodation and leisure services for skiers of all levels and demands. The proximity to the Kittilä airport ensures easy access to the resort attracting international visitors to Levi village and the whole Lapland region. The Finland-based developer Kassiopeia Finland Oy is investing in its local region as it currently owns and operates Hotel Levi Panorama, Levi Summit Congress Center and Hotel K5 Levi and above and beyond has interests in developing the exquisite Koutalaki area. Chapel of St.Lawrence, Vantaa Avanto Arkkitehdit Ltd photo : Kuvio.com Chapel of St Lawrence Winner of the European Copper in Architecture Awards This dedicated cemetery chapel aims to reconcile the emotional needs of mourners with the pragmatic demands of funerals. The building uses similar materials to the old structures in the area and the roof is patinated copper, like the roof of the old church. Many of the ceilings are finished with removable, perforated copper trays. The glazed walls toward the graveyard in the chapels are covered with a patinated copper mesh, which functions as a screen between the outside and the internal spaces of the chapel.
