The Olympic Journey, story of the Games

27 Jul – 12 Aug 2012

Hypsos in London the 19th of July 2012 – Behind the great spectacle of the Olympic Games lie powerful human stories. The purpose of the exhibition ‘The Olympic Journey, story of the Games’ is to inspire visitors from all over the world at the London Olympic Games by highlighting some of the remarkable athletes and tales from the rich history of the Games. BP and the Royal Opera House have joined forces with the Olympic Museum to create this free exhibition, designed by leading London exhibition designer Hypsos, which is staged at the Royal Opera House for the duration of the Olympic Games.

The Olympic Journey, story of the Games, is telling the Olympic story through the endeavours of ancient and modern Olympians, reminding us of the extraordinary achievements of which human beings are capable. The exhibition will take visitors on a journey starting in ancient Greece, the original home of the Olympic Games, through the vision of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the man behind the revival of the Games many centuries later. The experience will continue with the stories and inspirational achievements of iconic Olympic athletes of the last hundred years of Olympic history and will feature all of the Olympic medals and Torches of the modern Games.

Francis Gabet, Director of The Olympic Museum stated earlier this year: ‘Exhibits from The Olympic Museum have been displayed in different Olympic host cities before, but this exhibition is particularly exciting: it is much more ambitious and will truly bring the Olympic spirit to London.’ The exhibition is part of the LOCOG (The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) and the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Hypsos has a full turnkey roll on this temporary Olympic Museum, from design to build, install and maintain during The Games. Steered from London by creative director Tim Anderson, preparations for this remarkable exhibition started almost a year ago. Due to the short build-up time the entire exhibition has been set up, tested and perfected in all secrecy in the factory of exhibition designer Hypsos in the Netherlands. From there it was shipped back to The Royal Opera House in London.
