AIANY New Practices Committee celebrates achievements of innovative new New York firms

New Practices New York 2012 jury chooses seven firms as winners

NEW YORK, New York, January 30, 2012 – On Monday, January 23, 2012, the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter welcomed the New Practices New York 2012 competition jury to the Center for Architecture, where they announced the seven winners. The announcement was followed by a lively discussion of the winning entries. New Practices New York serves as the preeminent platform in New York City to recognize and promote new and innovative architecture and design firms.

Seven promising and pioneering new architecture and design firms working in New York were chosen as the New Practices New York 2012 competition winners. To qualify for the competition, practices had to be founded since 2006 and be located within the five boroughs of New York City. This is the second year that the New Practices New York competition has been open to multidisciplinary firms, widening the field of entrants to designers and young professionals in the process of becoming licensed architects.

The distinguished panel of jurors selected the competition’s winners from fifty-one entries. Jury members were: Stan Allen, FAIA, Principal, Stan Allen Architect; Kit von Dalwig, AIA, Principal, Manifold (winner of New Practices New York 2010); William Menking, Editor-in-Chief, The Architect’s Newspaper; Mahadev Raman, P.E., Chairman, Americas, Arup; Billie Tsien, AIA, Principal, Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects.

“I am proud to welcome the winners of the competition to the Center for Architecture and to include these promising young practices in the New Practices New York 2012 exhibition, presented as part of the FutureNow presidential theme,” said Joseph J. Aliotta, AIA, LEED AP, President of AIANY. “These seven practices have demonstrated their innovative, sustainable, and creative approaches are at the forefront of contemporary young firms. I look forward to learning more about their practices throughout this year, as we celebrate the future of the profession and architects’ contributions to New York City’s built environment. I’m certain that these design talents will give us new insight into what we can all expect from the future leaders of the industry.”

The AIA New York Chapter, with close to 5000 members, is the oldest and largest chapter of an 80,000-member national organization. With this history, the Chapter remains committed to supporting and promoting young and emerging talent. “New Practices New York brings together the creative energies of some of the most exciting young architects and designers on the planet.

Starting at the AIA New York Chapter with the premise that newly created firms need to be exhibited, published and given the opportunity to get the word out about their talent and projects, the program has expanded. Now, with the announcement of the selection of seven recently formed firms for AIANY honors, the New Practices Committee and selection jury address how firms survive and inspire during tough times. In this year when the AIANY theme is Future Now, the New Practices work and ideas are equally transformational,” said Marc Clemenceau Bailly, AIA, 2006 New Practices winner, and Philipp von Dalwig, AIA, New Practices Committee Co-Chairs.

This is the fourth iteration of the biennial New Practices competition. AIANY’s New Practices winners have also been exhibited in London (2007) and San Francisco (2009), and São Paulo (2011) and those cities have brought their works to NYC.
