BDP to design new environment and sustainability institute for Cornwall 13 Aug 2009 BDP has been selected, from an original 136 candidates, for the design of a proposed new research institute focusing on the environment and sustainability for the University of Exeter at their Tremough Campus, near Falmouth. The University shares the campus with University College Falmouth through the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative. The 3,000m2 building will provide the university with a hub for environmental knowledge and world-leading research into climate change, and will contain facilities to enable three themes for research: clean technologies, natural environment, and systemic socio-economic research. BDP Director Neil Sansum said of the win: "We are delighted to have been selected for this important project over such worthy opposition. It is a truly inspiring building on a very prominent site with very ambitious sustainability standards; we are very much looking forward to the challenge." BDP will design a landmark facility which will act as a 'living laboratory' for the testing of environmental equipment and sustainable solutions and will demonstrate this through the activities within, and also the way in which it is constructed and designed. The new Institute will comprise research laboratories, CT rooms and engineering workshops as well as interactive and flexible learning spaces. It is intended that the building is designed to achieve BREEAM 'Outstanding' and will draw heavily on local materials and sustainable methods of construction. BDP is appointed as architect, building services engineer and sustainability consultant. This is a European Convergence funded project for the University of Exeter for which detailed designs and planning permission are required before final approval to progress to construction.
