Built in 1991, the Shires is a two-level scheme which provides the city’s prime offer for major fashion multiples with retailers such as Next, River Island, Oasis, and Monsoon. Retailers to have opened at the scheme as part of a tenant mix revitalisation strategy include Punky Fish, Swarovski, Karen Millen, Principles, Schuh, Eat and Starbucks. Construction work on Highcross, a 60,000 m² extension to The Shires, which will be anchored by John Lewis, is progressing well and is scheduled to open in September 2008. Hammerson’s 60% interest was acquired in 2002.
