Essex Historical Landmark Revamped

Leading architect and historic buildings consultant, Purcell Miller Tritton, has recently completed a major conservation and restoration project at St John the Baptist Church in Thaxted, Essex.

The Grade 1 listed Church, dates back to 1340 and is one of the largest in the county at 183 feet long and 87ft wide. However, following a condition assessment carried out by Purcell Miller Tritton, a number of structural problems were identified in the chancel. Severe decay was found in the structural rafters and was accompanied by the acute deterioration of clerestory stonework.

In order to conserve and restore the significant structure, Purcell Miller Tritton undertook two years of intricate repairs, providing creative solutions to the sensitive restoration problems. This included the strengthening of the building through the insertion of shallow trusses into the roof, braced by the existing roof beams and re-leading of the roof. Walls were also repaired using clunch stone (a building material traditionally used in eastern England).

Simon Marks, Associate of Purcell Miller Tritton said, “We are thrilled with the result of the restoration and conservation of such an integral landmark. Thaxted Church is a building of great historical importance to the community and one of the major historical buildings in Essex.”
