Acting on behalf of the site’s developers, Kenham Developments, ColladoCollins’ designs feature a 81,000 sq ft Morrisons superstore with extensive car-parking facilities, a petrol station and 71 residential units.

The designs for the retail section of the development feature an undulating roof, which effectively ‘shrink wraps’ the volumes of the store to improve energy efficiency and help reduce running costs. The glazed east façade affords views into the market place inside the store and is protected from solar gain by the dynamic overhanging roof and vertical glass baffles.

In keeping with Morrisons’ tradition of incorporating a clock on the facade of their stores, ColladoCollins’ design proposes the positioning of a dynamic digital clock on both the north and south facades, which will be visible from Rom Valley Way.

The residential section of the development, comprising one, two and three bedroom dwellings, is located on the north side of the site and is predominantly terraced family housing with apartment building, creating a strong edge to Rom Valley Way and shielding the residential environment behind.

The development is part of a broader scheme that involves a land-swap with the London Borough of Havering to deliver a new ice-rink and swimming pool leisure centre in Romford. This site lies on the main southern radial road into Romford and presents a new active frontage that links to the high street to the north and the hospital to the south.

Jonathan Collins, Partner of ColladoCollins, said: “The development’s sustainable and striking design, topped by an undulating roof and a supersized digital clock, will present shoppers with a retail experience fitting for the 21st century. We look forward to delivering this scheme with Morrisons and Havering Borough Council that will enable a leisure scheme for Romford capable of hosting regional sporting events as part of the Olympic legacy in Romford.”
