Broadway Malyan-designed ‘Innovation Cube’ set to create new gateway into UK town
Global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan has supported client the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation to submit a planning application for the high-profile Northampton Innovation Centre which will provide office accommodation for up to 60 businesses. Located opposite Northampton railway station, the £6.5 million landmark Centre will be the first new building delivered in the St Peter’s Waterside regeneration area, and is also the first planning application to be submitted within the Northampton Enterprise Zone.
Following an appointment through its position on the UK Home & Communities Agency’s framework, the practice is delivering architecture, landscape architecture and interior design services for the Centre, and is leading the wider project team as lead consultant to the client.
The Centre takes the form of a cube, forming a pavilion and gateway to the town centre and wider St. Peter's Waterside masterplan, with flexibility prioritised through the efficient, easily subdivisible floor-plates. A rating of ‘BREEAM Excellent’ is targeted, with heating and cooling provided via a ground source heat pump.
Birmingham-based Broadway Malyan director Neil Rose said: ‘The planning application is the latest chapter in this high-profile town-centre scheme, as well as the wider regeneration masterplan, and it is testament to close partnering between the client and our diverse team of expert architects and planners.”
West Northamptonshire Development Corporation’s director of regeneration Chris Garden said: "Together with our plans for the redevelopment of Northampton Station, the Innovation Cube will form an impressive gateway into the centre of Northampton.
“We acquired the site last year and are currently talking to potential partners to help progress the project. As part of wider plans for the Enterprise Zone, it will be an important development for the town."
The planning application is due to be determined in the New Year.

A dramatic new classical building has been added to the Northampton skyline. Commissioned by St Andrew’s Healthcare, the 20,000 plus square metre hospital unit is probably the largest single building in the classical style to be built for 50 years.
The new residential, mental-health facility was designed by well-known classical architect Robert Adam of ADAM Architecture working closely with health-building experts, Oxford Architects.
