PLANS SUBMITTED FOR 'PIONEERING' MEDIPARK
Outline planning permission is being sought for a pioneering MediPark
for Nottingham which will bring together medical and science communities
into one unique site close to the Queen's Medical Centre.
Nottingham Regeneration Limited (NRL) has put forward the application
to Nottingham City Council after developing the submission for the
past year. Design concepts for the 3.5 hectare park have been done
through a series of public consultations.

MediPark, which has been designed by architects Studio Egret West,
is expected to build on the city's strengths as a Science City and
will encourage the collaboration and the sharing of ideas. The scheme
is a partnership between public and private sector bodies, working
together to deliver plans for new specialist facilities geared to
support the medical and clinical research sectors.
The application for the new MediPark has been led by NRL in conjunction
with number of its partners including Blueprint; Nottingham University
Hospitals NHS Trust; the city council and Nottingham Development Enterprise.
The submission is being funded by the Greater Nottingham Partnership.
John Nicholls of Nottingham Regeneration said: "Submission of
the MediPark application culminates a year of hard work for the project
team. The proposal provides a unique opportunity to offer a highly
competitive focus for inward investment healthcare projects."
Nick Ebbs of Blueprint said: "This scheme has national, if not
international, significance. There is world-leading expertise within
the medical sectors within Nottingham. This sort of investment in
knowledge-based industries needs to be made for Nottingham to assert
its rightful place as a major European city."
The submission is available to view through the city council's planning
portal www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/planning. The application was validated
by the council on 28 May and is currently undergoing a period of statutory
consultation. A decision is expected by August 2009.
Extensive feasibility work identified the development potential of
the application site to the south of Leen Gate, which is bounded by
the River Leen and the QMC to the west and Abbey Street to the east.
The application submitted to the city council presents the vision
for Nottingham MediPark and explains its deliverability over future
years.
The application proposes three phases of development with each phase
meeting the highest standards for design and sustainability. In total
nine buildings, each providing 3,000 to 5,000 sq m of floor space,
are envisaged with each phase being delivered over a number of years.
The buildings will be within an open space and park network with access
to the River Leen and served by the proposed NET Line 2.
