HKR Architects & Ellier Developments get go-ahead for Grays
Brewery, Chelmsford
15 Dec 2008
The London office of HKR Architects, the multi-award winning architecture
and design practice, has been given the go-ahead by planners for a
10,000 sq ft change-of-use and listed-building consent for Ellier
Developments at Grays Brewery in Chelmsford, Essex.

Located off Springfield Road, near to the River Chelmer, the development
is at the heart of Chelmsford within the primary retail and conservation
area of the market town - named by the Channel 4 TV programme 'Location,
Location, Location' as one of the top 10 places to live in the UK.
The property overlooks a courtyard, also overlooked by NEXT and neighbouring
units are occupied by Debenhams, Laura Ashley and the Early Learning
Centre.
The Grade II listed building will change from shops (A1) to cafes
and restaurants (A3) enlivening the space and increasing footfall.
The proposed restaurant will retain the historical features of No
7 Grays Brewery - which dates from the 19th Century - with frontage
access as well as high-quality urban realm providing vitality and
viability, regenerating the area throughout the day and into the evening
for alfresco dining and leisure activities.
The existing courtyard will be utilised so that it becomes a destination
venue for both the local community and visitors alike. Improvements
to the frontage - landscaping and seating - will create an informal
café society environment, particularly over the summer months,
enhancing the appearance and the character of the location.
Dara O'Flaherty of Ellier Developments said: "We believe that
the immense character of the building will create a unique atmosphere
and distinctive backdrop for any restaurant or café."
Daniel Adeshile, lead architect from HKR commented: "The design
promotes a contemporary aesthetic while respecting the historical
heritage of the building."
