Purcell Miller Tritton brings history back to life at Cusworth Hall

After two years of closure, Cusworth Hall in Doncaster reopened its doors to the public in May, following a £7 million refurbishment and restoration project by leading architects and historic buildings consultants, Purcell Miller Tritton.

Cusworth Hall

Cusworth Hall is an imposing 18th century mansion, set in extensive landscaped gardens. Previously home to the Battie-Wrightson family, who resided at Cusworth since 1669, the Grade I listed building is deemed a site of special interest due to the preservation of all the key elements of a Georgian country house. In recent years, the building has played host to the Museum of South Yorkshire Life, which illustrates the changing home, work and social life of people and communities across the region in the last 250 years.

Extensive repairs were carried out by Purcell Miller Tritton, who were enlisted by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, to act as Historic Buildings Advisor, Principal Architect and Contract Administrator for this project. Both internal and external restoration has been carried out, including the replacement of roofs, repair of stonework, renewal of mechanical and electrical services and exposure of ceiling paintings that have been hidden for over 50 years.

Purcell Miller Tritton Associate, Jane Roylance, acted as Contract Administrator on the project and has said, “It is fantastic to be a part of the restoration of such a magnificent and historic house, which now can be enjoyed by many, long into the future.”

She went on to say, “Purcell Miller Tritton specialises in integrating modern facilities into historic buildings. As such, we were able to install a new lift and upgrade visitor’s facilities, improving circulation of the building and allowing guests/visitors to truly appreciate the beauty of this building and its grounds.”
