Radiotherapy Department: Scottish Healthcare Project

NEW CANCER TREATMENT FACILITY
Ninewells Hospital, Dundee

Wylie Shanks Architects are delighted to announce their appointment as lead consultant and architect for the extension of the Radiotherapy Department at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. The £3m project involves provision of a new linear accelerator treatment room with associated patient and staff facilities, and has been won after competitive interview. The award recognises the practice`s long standing healthcare experience on medium size projects, particularly in cancer treatment facilities. With an involvement on many projects over the years at the Beatson Oncology Centre, the practice received a Special Award from NHS Scotland for the special contribution to the staff and patient environment made by the architectural design of the £5.6m first phase of the relocation of the Radiotherapy Outpatients Unit to Gartnavel General Hospital, the Tom Wheldon Building. It was designed to the practice's developing philosophies for healthcare buildings, which emphasise the use of natural light and ventilation as well adopting colour psychology to provide a non-institutional ambience.

On receiving the appointment, Iain MacLaren the practice Principal said 'It is most encouraging that the effort taken on previous projects by our healthcare team has been recognised with this appointment. It reaffirms our position in this sector as experienced team members providing a successful combination of traditional service with contemporary solutions.'
The Practice has also recently been awarded Secured By Design status by Strathclyde Police, following an award for their design of the Acute Admissions Unit at Dykebar Hospital.
