Abu Dhabi Transit Centre Abu Dhabi Intermodal Transit Centre and Carpark Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Design: Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates Directly adjacent to the KPF-designed Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the design for the Intermodal Transit Centre and Carpark is an elegant, delicately restrained mass and form which provides visual and physical continuity between the two buildings and, critically, retains primary views to the terminal building. images from architect The Intermodal Transit Centre brings together six different modes of transport – light railway (local), metro (regional), high-speed trains (national/international), private vehicles, taxis and bus services, with a pedestrian tunnel providing direct access from the station to the future Airport City development. All these modes are connected in one central zone at concourse level, and from there have their own distinct access routes with the concourse sized to deal with multiple flows, and kept predominantly clear to create space for travellers to orientate and gather. Internally the spaces emphasise transparency and legibility, connecting public spaces and enabling passenger flow. Views between the main concourse and platforms are carefully orchestrated to link the spaces, and daylight is introduced by skylights in the main roof structure animating the space and providing visual connections to the terminal building. The concept provides economic solutions for the structure, services and envelope without compromising passenger experience or durability, and maintains high levels of architectural expression and significant sustainable credentials. Transport services are sited to reduce travel distances for passengers and enable greater flexibility in phased construction and expansion to respond to the estimated 11 million potential passengers per annum by 2018.
