As soon as visitors arrive at The Blue Planet, the building will convey a sense of the special experience that awaits them inside. Here, the whirlpool has pulled you into another world - a world beneath the surface of the sea. If you tilt your head backwards, you understand that you are really a part of this aquarium because the roof above the foyer is made of glass, and at the same time it is the bottom of a pool. Copenhagen Zoo - Elephant House Foster + Partners image : Foster + Partners Copenhagen Zoo Building The project has been driven by research into the behavioural patterns of elephants. The tendency for bull elephants in the wild to roam away from the main herd prompted a plan organised around two separate enclosures. Covered with lightweight, glazed domes to provide natural light, these enclosures are designed to bring a sense of light and openness to a building type traditionally characterised as closed. The spaces maintain a strong visual connection with the sky and changing patterns of daylight and the distinctive ‘fritting’ on the glazing simulates a canopy of trees. Copenhagen Opera House Henning Larsen Architects photo © AW Copenhagen Opera House The design is reminiscent of the Concert Hall at Lucerne, Switzerland by architect Jean Nouvel*. When I visited Copenhagen in 2002 Holmen was a dull naval base cut off from the city; a recent visit in 2005 shows the huge cantilevers dominating the harbour from Knippelsbro. The Danish Architecture Centre is located just to the west in the lovely old quarter of Christianshavn. Due to being located across the harbour from the centre of Copenhagen the Opera building is still quite out of the way, quite a walk from the Strøget.
