Recently finished proposal for the demolished 107 acre Chrysler engine plant site, located in Kenosha, WI.

The proposal by UD4U for how to convert the 107 acre abandoned and demolished Kenosha Chrysler Engine Plant site, which is currently undergoing remediation, into an advanced manufacturing incubator that utilizes the combined assets of the local universities, the city government, and private investment.

Location: Kenosha County, southeastern corner of the state of Wisconsin, USA

UD4U Hosts Urban Design Competition for the Demolished 107 Acre Chrysler Engine Plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA.

UD4U is proud to announce the completion of it’s first urban design ideas competition. This competition focused on the possible uses and designs for the 107-acre abandoned Chrysler Engine Plant in Kenosha, WI, which is now owned by the city. The site is currently in the remediation phase, with the city recently starting the necessary work needed to complete the 5+ years cleanup process.

The urban design ideas competition was open to professionals and students of all countries, with the requirement that they either be in, or previously graduated from, a professional/registered university with a degree in one of the following: architecture, urban design, urban planning, landscape architecture, or engineering. Participants of the competition were asked to create their vision of what the site should become. The program was completely open, so the use and function of the structures, open spaces, etc. was completely up to each team. However, every team was asked to address 4 aspects that are vital to the site being a success and beneficial for the community. Those 4 aspects were history of the site and city, the site’s surrounding urban fabric, industries of Kenosha, and transportation options.

UD4U whittled the initial field of entries down to a “Final 15”, which were then discussed and voted on by the guest jury, with the guest jury picking the top 3 winners and 5 honorable mentions. The guest jury was comprised of some of the top urban design professionals in the area. It consisted of Andrew Moddrell, who is the Managing Director of PORT Urbanism; Christine Carlyle, who is a Principal and the Director of Planning at SCB (Solomon, Cordwell, Buenz); and Andrew Vesselinovitch, who is an Urban Designer at Ross Barney Architects.

The Results:

– 43 registered teams
– 17 countries, with roughly half of the entries coming from the U.S.
– First Place is from the U.S.
– Second Place is from Peru.
– Third Place is from Canada.
– 5 Honorable Mentions, with 4 of them being from the U.S. and the fifth coming from Northern Ireland.

The goal of the competition was to raise awareness in the community about the site and the larger issues surrounding it. Through presenting the wide range of options that are available for the site’s future, to both the community and the city leadership, UD4U hopes that these ideas will spur a serious conversation about the future of the site. UD4U’s long-term goal for the site is to see that it is developed to its highest and best use from both a community and development viewpoint, where the resulting intervention will focus on more than just profit. UD4U is also currently in the process of finishing up their own research project and design proposal for the site as well, which they hope could potentially be used by the town to create a master plan for the site.

The site that is to be examined is the recently torn down and abandoned Chrysler Engine Plant in Kenosha, WI. The city has recently started the cleanup process, which is why UD4U feel it would be a great time in the process to hold a competition and generate some ideas. Registration is currently open and is $100 for teams of up to 4 people. The submission deadline is June 1st and there is $5,000 in prizes.
